Small amount of peripheral toning and creases as can be seen in the online photograph. There does appear to be a deep scratch extending from the lower left corner to the edge of the first intersection. As the piece has not been viewed out of the frame, we are unable to tell if this goes through the paper. Overall, still presents well.

Very attractive half leather and buckram binding with five raised bands to the spine; titles and decorations gilt. The decorative end papers are split at the spine but the spine is intact and firm. There is minor foxing to the blank end papers but other than that, the internal pages and plates are in superb condition with all folding plates present and also in good condition. A most handsome example.

In addition to the two letters illustrated online (which are accompanied by their original envelopes), the lot includes: An incoming letter (and envelope) dated 1920, addressed to Shaw (Prisoner No. 317), from a Mr H. Prince. A January 1930 letter from Shaw, writing from Wallaroy Road, Woollahra. A printed prisoner’s letter (and original envelope) from Shaw to his mother, dated January 1925, from Goulburn jail. An October 1918 printed prisoner’s letter from Joseph Galvin (Prisoner No. 19), State Penitentiary, to a Mr Everingham (who appears to be his lawyer)… “P.S. Sir, it is a terrible thing to be in here innocent. I don’t mind if I am guilty but they do a lot of things to a broken man, so give me your true advice.”

The only other examples of these rare cards which we have seen were what appears to be a set of five, offered in our auction in December, 2024 which included a card depicting Pluto. That set brought $460 + BP. The present part set is from the same vendor. The two cards with pin holes at the top and have slight water damage along the left margin are Donald Duck and Goofy. Otherwise the card show no signs of tears or damage.

The book: the cover is in dilapidated condition and it lacks the plate usually affixed to the front cover. The two framed images that accompany the book are the two that are missing from the book and have been reduced in size to to fit into the frames. The remaining plates are in good condition, some with slight foxing. Mainly visible on the reverse. In our experience this is an extremely rare publication and none of us can remember having it previously.
