Evidence of possible re-veneering to the front of the box as grain figure is not consistent with the choice of timber used throughout the box. This has been refinished, retaining original fitted tray, key, and brass hardware.

The chest appears to have been refinished at long time ago. Has good colour and patination. Shrinkage cracks which appear on the blonde plinth base mostly to the left-hand side. This chest appears to be more of a hobbyist piece as opposed to a trained cabinet maker. No evidence of repairs or restorations.

In old, restored condition that has been refinish a long time ago or heavily revived 19th century finish. Scuffs, scratches and knocks as to be expect with age. Several small areas of veneer loss to the lower plinth support of the lyre trestle ends. Shrinkage separation to the cross-grain ogee mould below the table top. A rare style of table would respond well to sympathetic restoration.

One later replaced pane of glass and later keys to operate original locks. The fall front secretaire with replaced leatherette writing surface. Rubbing, wear and losses to the oil gilt finish to the pigeonholes, and secretaire draw blades. Single shelf absent from lower cupboard section of the bookcase. The bookcase is in remarkably original condition. This is one of a series of known bookcases made for Redmond Barry, matching the one described and illustrated in ‘Australian Furniture Pictorial History and Dictionary 1788-1939’ by Kevin Fahy an Andrew Simpson.

There is loss to the underside of the tabletop where the table may have fallen over at some point, only noticeable when table is upside down.

The mirror plate is original and period, still offering good reflection and very usable but with discolouration, frosting and discolouration to the edges. Brass candles sconces attached to the side of the mirror are later replacements.  

The parquetry specimen top with shrinkage cracks and movement as to be expected with age. Old colour and finish. Most likely an apprentice or hobbyist piece. The underside supports, pedestal, block column, and legs appear to be of a later date and most likely made to suit what was a specimen display tabletop. Recent banjo brass catch fitted.

There appears to be a crease or line of restoration through the top of the tree; otherwise presents in very good condition.
