1926 Order of the Legion of Honour - Chevalier, medal (40mm) five double-ray star white with green laurel wreath between arms, green oval laurel wreath swivel suspension,
central circle bearing France facing right crowned with laurel, encircled by blue enamel ring bearing the inscription in gilt letters ‘*REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE* 1870’.
reverse, crossed flags, blue enamel surround 'HONNEUR ET PATRIE', some light chips to enamel not detracting, also Commander of the Legion of Honour medal as above but 55mm (awarded in 1957) in fine condition, both in cased manufacturers boxes by 'Arthur Bertrand, Paris', plus 'Napoleons Legion' 240pp hardbound book [L/E: 301/600], front cover inscribed 'JASCHA HEIFETZ' detailing the history of the Legionnaires and listing the American Roster.
The National Order of the Legion of Honour is the highest French order for military and civil merits, technically restricted to French nationals, foreign nationals who have contributed to France or the ideals it upholds, may receive the honour. Jascha Heifetz was appointed Chevalier on April 7th 1926, Officer in 1939 and Commander on March 4th 1957. (3 items)
