Description:
1938 (Aug 1) airmail PPC to Nyasaland with KGV 2d & 3d tied by Brisbane cds paying Empire Air Mail Scheme letter rate on the first day of its introduction, per Qantas/Imperial Airways flying boat service via Cairo with 'LIMBE/15AUG38' arrival cds alongside, a few minor blemishes. [There was - and is - confusion over the Australian EAMS postcard rate: the rate for letters was 5d, the equivalent of the domestic base airmail letter rate. There was no published rate for postcards but Breckon lists the rate at a curious 4½d (ie only ½d less than the letter rate). However, the few we have seen are franked 3d, consistent with the standard "half the letter rate to the nearest penny" rule. Here, the sender was probably instructed to pay the 5d letter rate.
