Description:

FOUR PENCE - IMPERFORATE: 4d blue SG 3a block of 4, good even margins, small scissor-cut between the upper units, the left-hand pair with a very minor ironed-out bend mentioned only for total accuracy, Cat £1800++. Ex Lord Vestey: acquired for £900. There is such a gradation of "blue" shades from very pale to quite deep that we see no validity in separating "pale blue" SG 3 & "blue" SG 3a: we consider that the listings should be consolidated. We also note that the "deep dull blue" is from the first printing and should therefore be listed first. We are of the opinion that the catalogue listing should be amended as follows: SG 3 deep dull blue; SG 3a blue/pale blue (shades); SG 3b slate-blue.
