Description:
VICTORIA BARRACKS: 1914 (Dec 26) OHMS cover with 'District Head-Quarters/Commonwealth Military Forces - 3rd Military District/Victoria Barracks, Melbourne' imprint, to "J Englander/German Club/Melbourne" with 'PRISONERS/OF WAR DEPOT' h/s & 1d Roo punctured 'OS' tied by Melbourne cds. An enigma. (EFR at page 180)
We can find no reference to a POW camp at Victoria Barracks. However, Langwarrin Camp seems to have opened only in January 1915 so it is likely that the initial intake of internees were held at the Barracks. The letter may have been a request for the addressee to turn himself in!
