Description:
1841 (early) part-entire to Scotland signed "David Ogilvy" with an unusually fine strike of the rounded-boxed 'MELBOURNE/PAID' h/s in red & largely fine strike of the rare undated 'MELBOURNE/NSW' h/s on the flap, straight-line 'SHIP LETTER' b/s in red & Edinburgh arrival b/s of 'AUG/10/1841', minor soiling. Only about 15 examples of Melbourne's first handstamp are recorded. The 'MELBOURNE/PAID' h/s is almost as elusive. [The writer speaks of the pattern of land sales near Melbourne & states "The effect of the new Regulations is to throw the whole of that land open at one pound per acre..."]
