This is also evident with fill in screw or dowel holes to the tops of the legs and cabinet uprights. Loss to the lower applied carving of the waratah right hand side front upright. Small loss of carving to the lower right-hand corner of the door panel. Complete loss of waratah leaves and stem to the inside right cabinet upright. Small shrinkage cracks and join separations as to be expected. Small loss to edge of back right-hand leg. Structurally sound and secure, usable condition. The lower drawer top edge with some filler infill near the lock, this appears to have been done a very long time ago. Turned Blackwood feet appear to be original as do the knobs. Two-piece solid blackwood top with a few shrinkage cracks, separation to the original join of the two boards, and larger shrinkage crack both filled with slithers of veneer/timber. The back board of the top has been secured both sides with a fixing through the board and neatly professional filled and finished with a wooden plug, this in our opinion appears to be where the board has been secured to the side panels where it had separated from the original joins. This appears to be a professional and sympathetic repair. The upper and lower exposed tenon joinery to the doors is matching in construction, the back fielded panels to the upper and lower cabinet are matching in construction. The overall cuts, colour and timber use match both top and lower section as are the brass pinlocks to both the upper and lower doors. We believe both top and bottom have always been together and are originally made. The lower left hand facing door recess panel with old splits and cracks, which have been repaired overtime. Lot #368 CROWN STREET, WOMEN'S HOSPITAL (SYDNEY). Colonial Australian cedar bookcase fitted with numerous drawers (some of them double depth), circa 1870. The Crown Street Women's Hospital located in Surry Hills, Sydney was a key maternity hospital for over 90 years. This bookcase was donated to the Australiana Fund at the closure of the hospital in 1983. 247cm high, 93cm wide, 60cm deep.
