A fabulous piece, the only example we’ve seen. This appears to be full agricultural made blacksmith piece. Which offers more tantalising questions than answers. Original hardware. No repairs or restoration. Scuffs, scratches, and bruises as expected with age. Shrinkage separations to the joinery most particular to the inside mitered lid frame with shrinkage crack running across the top marquetry panel on the lid (as can be seen in images). These are all genuine signs of age. A very nice example. General scuffs and scratches as to be expected with age. The two tongues of the lock strike plate fitted to the lid are missing. A nice honest example. Condition ReportOriginal finish, colour, and patination. Three shrinkage separation cracks to the lid with smaller ones radiating from the corners. Original brass hinges. The original red velvet covering to the bottom of the box has been glued down in sections where it has been lifting. This is an incredible rare survivor retaining its maker’s label. Two renewed old screws fitted on bottom hinge. The lid and carcass slightly warped as is often the case with these boxes, doesn’t detract from its overall appearance. One parquetry veneer specimen fitted to the inside of the lid slightly lifting. A good original example of its type. Would respond well to a light clean and wax.
